Overnight Stay

Our family used the voucher we had for a free overnight stay at the Courtyard By Marriott in Elmhurst. We had hot dogs and Italian beefs for lunch at Portillo's in Elmhurst before we went over to the hotel to check-in. We requested a room on the upper floors facing west above Salt Creek. There was hardly anybody in the hotel. Once we checked in and got unpacked we went downstairs to the hot tub and pool. We spent some time in the hot tub and swam while the boys used the exercise room to get a good workout. Then they played in the pool for over two hours while I read. We had the pool, hot tub and workout room all to ourselves. After swimming I went to Nancy's Pizza in Elmhurst and picked up a large stuffed deep dish pizza. It's been a long time since we had Nancy's Pizza. In my opinion it's almost as good as Giordano's. We watched "Die Hard 3" on cable while we enjoyed our pizza. We went to sleep about 10:30 p.m. The boys stayed up reading and surfing the internet until about 12:00 p.m. It was a very relaxing evening.

Bonfield Express

I finished my second 5K on Thanksgiving morning. My time was 45:31 which would have put me in 1090th place right in the middle of the pack of about 2800 runners and walkers. My first mile was 15:05, second 31:15. My pace was just over 15 minutes a mile - getting better. It was beautiful sunny morning and the weather was actually nice for November. It was a nice run/walk through downtown Downers Grove. We walked through a subdivision - Denburn Woods that I had never been through. I saw my cousin Judy and her daughter out walking their dog. She lives along the route. Both my boys ran the race and my oldest son finished 12th overall with a time of 17:37 - amazing. My youngest son also did very well finishing 456th with a time of 28:40. Great job guys.

Shedd Aquarium

We went to the screening of the WTTW special - "Swimming With The Sharks with Anna Davlantes." Somehow I was invited and allowed to bring a guest - my wife. We got there right at 6:00 p.m. We went downstairs to the Wild Reef area where they had an open bar and hors d' oeuvres. Very nice. We got to drink while looking at the sharks in the wild reef exhibit. We got a behind the scenes tour by Lise Christopher the Collections Manager of Shedd Aquarium. She showed us where they feed and take care of the sharks. It was pretty cool seeing a lot of the behind the scenes stuff shown in the special. We met some of the other people from Shedd Aquarium. Then we went to an auditorium where Anna Davlantes talked about the show. We watched some of the highlights and then there was a question and answer period. We saw Warner Saunders from Channel 5 and Rick Pearson from the Chicago Tribune. There were a lot of executives there from WTTW and the Shedd Aquarium. It was very educational and I'm glad we went.

Smashing Pumpkins

We went to see the Smashing Pumpkins at the Chicago Theatre. We had a quick dinner right across the street at PotBellys. Our seats were in the upper balcony off to the right of the stage. We purchased them the minute they went on sale. We tried for the weekend shows and they were already sold out. It was a pretty mellow show and they played for about three hours. The boys each got a souvenir tee-shirt. My oldest son is a big fan.

Review from the Daily Herald:

"Oh, what a beautiful night," Billy Corgan sang in "Owata," one of several new songs that surfaced during Smashing Pumpkins' Wednesday, Nov. 19, concert. Beauty seemed to be the theme of the evening, dubbed "White Crosses" by Glendale Heights-bred alternative rock titan Corgan. The second of two consecutive sold-out shows at the Chicago Theatre, it focused on the sweeter, softer side of the band's repertoire. Compared with Tuesday's heavier, more experimental "Black Sunshine" set, which frequently devolved into a tuneless racket, "Crosses" was much more gratifying for its melodious heart. Many of the golden-age hits missing from Tuesday's show finally appeared. The celebratory sarcasm of "Cherub Rock" and the snarling goth metal swing of "Zero" both seemed rushed, as the Pumpkins' most popular songs tended to during these shows. Yet the potentially overblown "Disarm" was shockingly subdued (Corgan confessed to a cold before singing it) and the gently bouncing "1979" nestled in nostalgic melody like it was a warm, fuzzy pillow. Speaking of warm fuzzies, the vibrant "Cupid de Locke" introduced the five additional musicians touring with the quartet, augmenting its innocent fairyland twinkle while guitarist Jeff Schroeder provided slight friction to push it forward. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the only remaining original member other than Corgan, pummeled dependably throughout an energized "Bodies," and was the best facet of "As Rome Burns," a clattering, confrontational, calamitous new track. Yes, Wednesday contained the first Chicago performance of six not-yet-unrecorded tunes, most of which drew mature radiance from vintage rock sounds. Corgan's wistful acoustic/harmonica intro on "99 Floors" expanded into a rootsy ballad once the band kicked in. The aforementioned "Owata" was pure dream pop, enlivened by Corgan and Jeff Schroeder's chiming, overlapping guitars. "A Song for a Son" started on a "Stairway to Heaven" track before swelling upon to a well-developed crescendo - a signature Pumpkins move also displayed Wednesday during "Soma" and "I of the Mourning." "The March Hare" offered an odd, low-key funk groove led by Chamberlin's tribal percussion and a top-hatted, hopping Corgan, morphing into oldie "Suffer" for a bit.Ginger Reyes' bass throb and Lisa Harriton's ominous organ ruled the epic "Gossamer," which incorporated shoegaze grace, metal precision and psychedelic noodling into the group's most ambitious recent tune. Yet, as pleasant as the "Crosses" set could be, even with the occasional energetic injection, something was missing, and it's the same thing that was missing from Tuesday's show. Fans love Smashing Pumpkins because Corgan and crew can be soft and loud, slow and fast, bewitching and annoying. By consciously splitting those personalities, they could only tell half of their story each night. For a Technicolor band, these were monochrome shows

Drop Shot

I finished reading "Drop Shot" by Harlan Coben.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Valerie Simpson is a young female tennis star with a troubled past who's now on the verge of a comeback and wants Myron as her agent. Myron, who's also got the hottest young male tennis star, Duane Richwood, primed to take his first grand slam tournament, couldn't be happier. That is, until Valerie is murdered in broad daylight at the U.S. Open and Myron's number one client becomes the number one suspect. Clearing Duane's name should be easy enough. Duane was playing in a match at the time of Valerie's death. But why is his phone number in Valerie's black book when he claims only to have known her in passing? Why was she calling him from a phone booth on the street? The police stop caring once they pin the murder on a man known for having stalked Valerie and seen talking to her moments before the murder. But Myron isn't satisfied. It seems too clean for him. Myron pries a bit and finds himself prying open the past where six years before, Valerie's fiancee, the son of a senator, was brutally murdered by a juvenile delinquent and a straight-A student was subsequently gunned down on the street in retaliation, his death squandered in bureaucratic files. And everyone from the Senator to the mob want Myron to stop digging. The truth beneath the truth is not only dangerous, it's deadly. And Myron may be the next victim.

Michael Clayton

I watched the DVD "Michael Clayton."

Synopsis

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is an in-house "fixer" at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. At the behest of the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack), Clayton, a former prosecutor from a family of cops, takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's dirtiest work. Clayton cleans up clients' messes, handling anything from hit-and-runs and damaging stories in the press to shoplifting wives and crooked politicians. Though burned out and discontented in his job, Clayton is inextricably tied to the firm. At the agrochemical company U/North, the career of in-house chief counsel Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) rests on the settlement of the suit that Kenner, Bach & Ledeen is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. When the firm's top litigator, the brilliant Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson), has an apparent breakdown and tries to sabotage the entire case, Marty Bach sends Michael Clayton to tackle this unprecedented disaster and, in doing so, Clayton comes face to face with the reality of who he has become. Clayton is an anomaly at the white-shoe firm; in spite of his 15-year tenure, he has not been promoted to partner and probably never will be. His boss, Marty Bach, sees Clayton as an invaluable asset to the firm, but only in his "niche," one that is relegated to cleaning up the firm's sticky situations quickly and quietly.

Suzy, Led Zeppelin and Me

I finished reading "Suzy, Led Zeppelin and Me" by Martin Millar. I like British humor and this type of book makes me think I could write a book about my adventures.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Glasgow, 1972, and all the coolest kids in town are queuing up for Led Zeppelin tickets. Overhead, a Zeppelin approaches. Its passengers, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Hank Williams, think it's worth leaving heaven to see the greatest rock band in the world. Even the fairies are fans. Martin and Greg have overactive imaginations. When they aren't fighting the monstrous hordes of Xotha, they are competing for the attentions of Suzy. But she's not likely to ditch Zed, the hippest boy in the school, for the likes of them, is she? Still, with Led Zeppelin on the way, anything can happen.

The Right Mistake

I finished reading "The Right Mistake" by Walter Mosley.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Living in South Central L.A., Socrates Fortlow is a sixty-year-old ex-convict, still strong enough to kill men with his bare hands. Now freed after serving twenty-seven years in prison, he is filled with profound guilt about his own crimes and disheartened by the chaos of the streets. Along with his gambler friend Billy Psalms, Socrates calls together local people of all races from their different social stations—lawyers, gangsters, preachers, Buddhists, businessmen—to conduct meetings of a Thinkers’ Club, where all can discuss the unanswerable questions in life. The street philosopher enjoins his friends to explore—even in the knowledge that there’s nothing that they personally can do to change the ways of the world what might be done anyway, what it would take to change themselves. Infiltrated by undercover cops, and threatened by strain from within, tensions rise as hot-blooded gangsters and respectable deacons fight over issues of personal and social responsibility. But simply by asking questions about racial authenticity, street justice, infidelity, poverty, and the possibility of mutual understanding, Socrates and his unlikely crew actually begin to make a difference.

When Bob Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Carl Bernstein broke the story that Richard Nixon (Dan Hedaya) knew about the attempt to bug the Democratic headquarters in Watergate, they identified their source only as Deep Throat. Gordon Liddy's (Harry Shearer)presence in the hotel during the bugging. To keep them quiet, Nixon hires them as "official White House dog walkers," then "Presidential youth advisors." However, when they learn the truth about what is going on they take their story to Woodward and Bernstein. Nixon attempts all kinds of measures to stop them. He was tricky, they were better.

First 5K

I completed my first 5K with a time of 47:49 minutes at a pace of 15:25 minutes per mile. When I use to walk the track with the boys my pace was between 19:00 and 20:00 minutes per mile. I jogged a little at the beginning and at the end. My goal was to finish under 50:00. It was a nice morning walk through Cantigny and the Cantigny golf course. I took the place of my oldest son who was running in the Sectionals for his high school cross country team. My youngest son also finished with a time of 24:18 minutes at a pace of 7:50 minutes per mile. He finished 6th in his age group. We took off right afterwards to go to my other son's race at Reavis High School in Burbank.
